A new type of new media can be a healthcare application on a smartphone or any mobile device. Diseases and mental illnesses have become prominent in today’s society and it is discussed about a lot on social media of people sharing their stories and struggles with it. I was thinking about an app that gives reminders of what one should do in order to combat the mental illness or disease, what types of exercise, medication, meditation, etc, they need to help them throughout the day. If one is diagnosed with a disease (and by an actual doctor), the doctor can sign off on the medication and basically use the app to remind their patients on what to do and when to do it. I feel like this idea can really help the general public.

Wiki So Far

Although I have not contributed to the Class Wiki yet, I hope to do so in various different categories, that is related to beauty, music, gaming, and social media as well as networking. Most of my research has been influenced by the trends I usually see on the social media platforms and what I experience in my daily life. I hope to talk about the platform of YouTube/Twitter/ Instagram because that is where the majority of the trends start out. I still have to find more articles to support my claims.

P2P

With the rise of technology, the Internet has made it possible for people to share information with others. File sharing is characterized to be an act of making material available through the computer network. Files can be categorized as entertainment such as movies, music, games, etc. can be shared with others through the use of a computer or any device. A common form of file sharing is P2P. P2P, also known as “Peer-to-Peer” which allows people to communicate with others, hence the word “peer”. Networks such as “BitTorrent” is known to be one of the best P2P programs, as stated in Wired Clive Thompson’s “The BitTorrent Effect”. The platform allows its users to download and upload data such as music or movies which eventually led to huge lawsuits by major production companies. Privacy

Privacy and confidentiality have been a huge concern when it comes to new media. Many social media platforms, if not all, allow one to create a profile of their most basic information. In order for one to even use a social media platform, one would have to create a profile which allows them to share their personal data to contribute to the platform. Many users, often times, share more information than asked for which creates issues of privacy and confidentiality. Many big companies, ex: Facebook has had privacy issues where hackers breached their security and intrude into their systems, essentially stealing a user’s personal information. This eventually led to potential scams that have harmed victims financially. Viruses and hackers are the biggest problems related to new media and they create an ordeal for the daily new media users. Many social media companies have taken precaution because their user’s privacy is important to them, they want to keep the trust they have with their use...

Advice

New media has changed the ways of education. Many schools have used new media to connect with the younger generations. When it comes to assigning homework, readings, assignments, reminding students of important dates, if school is closed, etc. It can be crazy at times because students receive notifications from many different applications, such as Blackboard, CUNY Alert, etc. A suggestion can be to have a unified platform for Baruch where all professors and students, as well as the school itself, has access to which has almost anything one can think of. A platform where one can go to register for classes at the same time as checking the current classes they are currently taking. A platform where they have access to their transcript. A platform where professors can make announcements and assign homework. Where a calendar is readily available for students that has all the important dates/events. It becomes hectic when one has to remember all of their credentials for different web...

Creativity and New Media

I decided to use Apple’s AniMoji, which is animated emojis Apple has created that responds to facial expressions. I use it quite often because it’s very entertaining. I decided to make a screen record on my phone of how one can go about making an AniMoji. In this video, I didn’t realize it, but I was lip syncing to a song by Kacey Musgraves, an American singer and songwriter. I was inspired by her song “Happy and Sad” and decided to create a character of a cowboy only because the song has country themed elements. You can see, Apple offers different features when it comes to skin tone, hair type, color, face shape, eye shape, hats, and different accessories. They made sure to cater to everyone and be diverse as possible. In the video, you’ll see me picking out different features that I thought would fit right for the character I had in mind. Creativity

The rise of new media has allowed creativity to be reached at levels it’s never seen before. Now, new media allows people to express themselves in different ways on media platforms when it comes to entertainment and art. People take pictures and texts out of context and create something out of it. An example can be memes, parodies, gifs, etc. These three examples have changed our culture to what it is today, it is being used by multiple generations all due to new media. These examples are passed to one another as a form of communication that sometimes really does not have a serious meaning behind it, it’s mostly use for comedic effect. According to Brooks Barnes  Disney Tolerates a Rap Parody of Its Critters. But Why? , the author states how a musical artist took Disney characters to create a mash-up parody of a song. The artist took something out of context and used it to their own benefit. The parody later became popular which seems to be great because it promoteed both sides ...
