Blog vs. Wiki

In modern day culture, blogs and wikis are forms of new media where people are able to express themselves through posting content, specifically writing. Both platforms are similar in a way where you can post whatever you choose and share it with others. Many people have used blogs and wikis for many reasons, one can be for leisure, education and sometimes for work as well. Blogs and wikis both contribute to the convergence of the networked world. Essentially, both platforms are online journals to document information where people can learn and share with one another.

Despite the similarities of both platforms, they are distinctive in their own way. Unlike blogs, wikis are more commonly used for collaboration. According to Margaret Locher’s More on How to Build Your Own Wikipedia, a team was able to build a management system where they were able to work at a faster pace to get their tasks down. Wiki is known to be a “software application that allows groups of users to create, edit and comment on online documents—so that each team member could contribute and access up-to-date information on the project”, essentially being a project management tool for a company to work effectively and efficiently.

However, that is not always the case when it comes to a social platform such as blogs. I find blogs to be more personal/informal and wiki’s to be more collaborative. I usually see blogs of people expressing themselves on various topics, one can be politics, recreational, entertainment, etc. But blogs can also be used in a collaborative sense. According to Michael Wilson’s Brooklyn Blog Helps Lead to Drug Raid, the author states how a Brooklyn website, how it went from talking about subjects regarding real estate to community events toward solving a major drug crime in the city. People living in the community were able to share what they were experiencing around them as a whole, which had helped the police solve a case. That can be an example of being collaborative while using blogs.

As for wiki, I hope to see wiki being more cautious when it comes to letting people edit information. At times it can mislead others in a negative way, and I hope the company can work on that.

  1. hello Fatimah, i like the way you compare the both wiki and blog, i agree with all of your points. it is surprising at the same time interesting the part you talking about sharing blogs solving a case. i think wiki is more informative on other hand, blog is mostly use for personal thoughts. Just like everything in this world, blog and wiki has bad/ good use of it. It depends on for what purpose people make use of it.
